16 years ago today, on February 7th, 2002, something wonderful, oh, the seemingly impossible happened.Nathaniel Mervar was transferred over from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light.
I surrendered this life and all that I am to Jesus Christ, my Savior and Lord.
Oh, how clearly do I remember this day. My family and I had just arrived home from Winter Jam. I was standing just outside our pantry to the left of the door. I could point out the exact spot to within a few inches where I stood and expressed to my parents I desired Jesus to be my Savior.
What was said and prayed has long since faded from my memory, but one truth has not. On that day, I became a child of the one true King. I was redirected from Hell to Heaven. Nathaniel died and the Holy Spirit took up residence in my life. Nathaniel became a new creation. My title “sinner” was exchanged for the title “saint.” My filthy rags were removed and I was clothed in Christ’s perfect righteousness.
Oh, what a glorious day! The angels in Heaven rejoiced as the name "Nathaniel Mervar" was added to the Lamb’s Book of Life.Nathaniel was saved.
Looking back 16 years ago to this day is truly humbling. I don’t even recognize myself any more. Though far from being 100% Christlike, the Christlike character I do see resonating from my life is so encouraging and overwhelming. God be praised!
Jesus has been so faithful the past 16 years, infinitely more than I deserve. Yet, when you love someone unconditionally you stick with them and continue to love them no matter what, and that’s my Jesus for you!
I’d be lying to you if I said the road has been smooth and full of sunshine and puffy, white clouds.
On the contrary, I’ve been drenched by the rain, tripped and fallen, even drifted from the path at times. Yet, even in the deepest of valleys and darkest of nights He has still been there for me. Even on the days I have tuned out His voice, the moment I have called His name, I have found that He was right there, shielding me so often from even further folly on my part. There have been days and even weeks when I have lived more for myself rather than Him. Days where I deceived everyone with my supposed passion for Christ and yet the condition of my heart couldn’t have been farther from Him. Yet, even then He remained faithful and still welcomed me back into His loving arms when I repented.
On the flip side, He has been with me on the mountain tops as we have beheld the glory of His perfect plan. He has also been with me in my deepest sorrow and pain, comforting me as the tears fell.Oh, how can I express to you the glorious reality of walking with my Jesus? It truly is something you cannot fully understand till you have walked with Him yourself.
Oh, how I pity all those who are chasing the vain and worthless things of this world.
Cars, jobs, careers, money, and human relationships they think will fill that void in their lives. The vain pleasure, power, “success,” stuff, iPhones, Macs, brand-name clothes, you fill in the blanks, leisure, comfort and ease.It is all worthless. Truly it is only those who have Jesus who are really rich.
"Foolish, silly, and a waster of his life." Yes, some would use those words to describe this relationship I have with Jesus and my dedication to serving and glorifying His name alone. (Psalm 115:1)
Yet, you know, you haven’t lived till you have died to yourself! (Galatians 2:20) You aren’t free until you are His slave! (Luke 17:10)
You aren’t content till you lose everything and find He is enough! (Philippians 3:8)
You don’t make a difference in this world until you realize you can’t, only He can! (Ephesians 6:10)
You don’t find true satisfaction until you take His yoke upon your shoulders! (Matthew 11:28-30)
The world would not label me as rich, influential, powerful or even educated. Truth is, I will always be a failure and a fool in the eyes of the world.
Well, if that’s the case, may God give me grace to be the biggest failure and fool this world has ever seen! (1 Corinthians 4:10a)
I shall joyfully face reproach for the name of my Lord, because OH, HE IS SO WONDERFUL! His love is enough. His presence is enough. You can have the world, just give me Jesus!
I could go on all night concerning the beauty of my Savior, but I shall leave you with these final thoughts.
Sixteen years ago, I surrendered to Jesus and received eternal life. While the path has been filled with joy and tribulation, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.Yet, if I may be so bold, do you have a February 7th, 2002 date in your life?
Have you received this free gift of salvation?
Now I realize most of you who read this will almost certainly say “Yes” and then keep on reading. I challenge you, don’t answer flippantly and move on. Seriously, have you had a February 7th, 2002 date in your life?
I’m not questioning your salvation, I am just not afraid to ask the hard questions. I earnestly desire for you to have the same 100% bedrock assurance that I do. If I die tonight, I know where I am going and Whom I am going to see.
Are you 100% certain, beyond the shadow of the doubt, no questioning, no “I hope so” sure that you are saved?
If there is any question, I beg of you, resolve it tonight. No one is guaranteed tomorrow.
Salvation isn’t complicated-a three year-old received and understood it sixteen years ago.
We are all sinners separated from a holy God because of our rebellion against His perfect moral law. (Romans 3:23)
We deserve death and eternity in Hell, separated from God’s holy presence. (Romans 6:23)
Yet, God sent His Son into this world, born of a virgin. Jesus lived a sinless life, fulfilling the perfect requirements of the law I could never meet. He then died on the cross, shedding His blood as an atonement/payment for my sins. He rose again on the third day and is seated at the right hand of God the Father to this day. (John 3:16, Hebrews 1:3)
All who recognize their sin, their need for a Savior and call upon Jesus as Savior and Lord will be saved. (Romans 8:1, 10:13)
And for those of you who might be pulling out the “I’m a Good Person Argument,” let’s take a quick look at some of the The Ten Commandments. Ever stolen? Value is irrelevant. Lied? Half-truths and white lies included. A lie is a lie. Ever coveted, desiring something that wasn’t yours? Have you always honored your parents?
That’s only four and I’m certain all reading have broken them. If you maintain your innocence, I doubly know you are a liar. :) (James 2:10)
This is the beauty though of what Jesus did for you and me! His sacrifice provided the only way for us to be reconciled to the Father! (John 14:6)
Allow me to reiterate, all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved!
For those of you who are saved, praise God! I shall see you in Heaven! :) I challenge you, don’t lose the beauty of the salvation you have been given! Marvel and rejoice in your Savior and His love everyday! And for that matter, go share this glorious reality with others! (2 Corinthians 5:20)
Oh, praise be to my Lord and Savior, my Jesus! He is worth my all and He is worthy of your all too!"What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ."
- Philippians 3:8
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"
- 1 John 3:1a
