43 years ago today, the fateful decision of legalizing abortion was made in the United States of America. Since that time, over 57 million innocent babies have been murdered under the standard of pro-choice.
It is a somber day as we consider what horrible atrocities have been committed in our country. Our founding fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal and have certain unalienable rights endowed to them by their Creator and among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet, the basic unalienable right of life has been denied to millions of our own citizens, and most of the time, simply because they were an "inconvenience."
Yet, we are not the creators of life and therefore we have no right to dictate the terms for life. God is the Creator of all life as the psalmist declares in Psalm 139:13-16
"For You created my inmost being;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from You
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in Your book
before one of them came to be."
All life is precious in His sight and no person has the right to take the life of another, whether it be while that person is in the womb, in the prime of their life, or is elderly. Every single person is created in the image of God and should be respected as such.
"So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them." -Genesis 1:27
In a culture that glorifies the god of self and our selfish desires before the needs of others, it is sadly no surprise to see what the result of the legalization of abortion has done to our country.
Also, just because abortion has the legal status attached to it by our Supreme Court, doesn't mean it is right in God's eyes. Abortion is still murder in His eyes and that will never change, no matter what the culture decides as a whole. Wrong is wrong, no matter how many people call it "right."
On the disgraceful anniversary of the legalization of the wholesale murder of innocent babies, let us take the time today to drop to our knees and ask God for the forgiveness of our country. Let us pray for a heart change in our nation. Let us pray that hearts would be changed by the power of the gospel and that our nation would wake up to the utter self-destruction that it is heading towards.
As God Himself promises in His Word, "If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land." -2 Chronicles 7:14
We need healing, we need forgiveness, we need mercy, we need grace in this country and the Lord is willing to provide it, if we simply repent and seek His face with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
May God have mercy on America for our great sin and may our country, once again, return to Him!
